Parents,
I hope that everyone had a great weekend! I have a time correction for Open House. As it turns out, there were two time schedules posted. Open House begins at 6:30 in the classrooms with a broadcast shown from administration, PTA, and the Foundation. I will share class and grade level information from 7:00-7:30. The second session is from 7:35-8:00 and this is the session that I will be attending in my son's classroom. I apologize for the error and any conflicts that this causes. Target Open House for current students is at 5:30 in the Learning Commons. Weekly updates: Reminders: -Turn in Braves ticket orders - Foundation raffle tickets for VIP parking due August 31st - please send me a note if your child is attending a club - August 29th is Early Release- please send a note if your child will go home a different way -PE block on Friday - Students should be reading for 15-20 every night Your child may have come home on Friday and told you about Fluffy, our class pet. He is our black lab (stuffed animal 😊) that will come home with a student each weekend. Your child will also bring home his journal to write and draw about his experiences while at home with them. I've explained to students that if they are chosen for the weekend and they know it is not a good weekend or they are traveling out of town they can let me know and I will save them for a different week. They were very excited and enjoyed naming our new friend! Math: This week will continue with place value and we will begin skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. Math choice boards during math centers will be introduced. Students will have 9 activities to choose from during the week while I am meeting with small groups. Reading: This week, students will begin working on identifying the story structure in our read aloud and their independent reading. Characters, Setting, Beginning, Middle, End, Problem, Solution Phonics: Reviewing th, wh, sh, and ch blends will continue throughout the month. During my Orton-Gillingham training, I received a deck of phonics cards and the kids are enjoying reviewing our sounds each day with these cards. Some might even be able to show you the neat way to "hear" sounds with your breath and on your throat. This week, we will look at spelling two-syllable words with closed patterns. Writing: On Friday, we began discussing what it means to write a small moment story. This week, as we begin our narrative unit, we will continue learning and begin practicing writing a "seed story"/small moment and not writing about the whole watermelon piece. Lessons will focus on taking a small story and retelling and writing it with detail. Social Studies: We will continue learning about the 5 regions in Georgia: Valley and Ridge, Appalachian Plateau, Blue Ridge, Coastal Plains, and Piedmont. At home, I encourage you to talk with your child about any of these regions that you have visited.
