Tuesday is the Force and Motion test. I have encouraged all students to spend time putting the definitions into their own words. They can do this in writing or verbally. It will help with checking understanding and ensure that they know each meaning. We will have some fun with ramps at the end of the week!

I am glad that I will be seeing your children more this week in Science! The half days during Conference week last week limited our time to learn about Force and Motion. This week, we will focus on Simple Machines. Students will learn about simple machines on Monday, search around the house to see if they can identify any at home, and then we will end our week with putting simple machines to work! I am going to encourage students to further their learning outside of the classroom when they are able. If they ask you to take pictures or videos, please know how much I appreciate your help with this! However, please know that I am not expecting you, nor asking your child, to run to Home Depot to create extravagant projects. I want them to explore the created things around them. Please let me know if you have any questions as our work continues.

This week our focus is continuing with clouds and how they relate to the current weather. Today we discussed how clouds outside can also inform us about upcoming weather. We even had fun naming the trail of white "smoke" that is often seen from jets in the sky!
With Hurricane Harvey and the impending Hurricane Irma, the clouds and weather have provided some interesting learning opportunities and discussions! I appreciate your support in allowing your child to step outside for the various cloud homework activities.
I told students that an extra credit opportunity for the nine weeks will be coming soon. I will post that information after we have gone over it in class. I told students that I would post some of the cloud information that we looked at today to have as reference once they began the project.

This week we are continuing with the water cycle. Part Two of our ziploc bag experiment began today. We had to make an impromptu addition to our experiment last week since the sun wouldn't come out! Ask your child about this experiment and what differences they see in the cloudy day vs sunny day bags. On Wednesday, I will be going over information about a Water Cycle quiz on Wed., Aug 23rd. I will talk with them about how to review notes and "study" for Science and Social Studies vocabulary. Hopefully you will see your child bring home their journal every day starting Wednesday. All notes and vocabulary for this unit have been given and students should have copied from my journal as we discussed it on the board. When we take notes, students have my journal to copy from. I am teaching them how to structure these notes and vocabulary as we work through it. It is very important for your child to borrow my journal or another student's journal if they are absent.

Welcome to Science!
This blog will contain information for both Mrs. Denny's homeroom, as well as my homeroom. In this unit, students will be learning about the water cycle. We have taken notes on vocabulary terms for the unit and set up an experiment for this week. Currently, the students' only homework is to observe any rain this week. We will discuss how it relates to the water cycle on Friday.
