We have been working quickly to finish filling out the European Explorers information chart. We fell behind because of 3 days without Social Studies. Students will not be quizzed on this material. The completed chart is due Tuesday, January 17th. Students should have all but one person filled in. If your child has a lot of blanks, you may want to ask them what they have been doing while we were taking notest. They asked me to attach a blank chart to my blog so that they can access if needed.
Next week, we will begin colonization.

Updates and December 19-20th
The break is almost upon us! Students have been learning about various explorers via a webquest search. I created a website with information, their task, and some research sites. We will continue with this work next week and after the winter break. I am going to be adding more to the site over the break so the students have plenty of research sources.
The test on all Native American tribes is next Tuesday. Students should have completed the study guide that I gave them last Friday. I have attached below a completed one for your reference if you see that your child did not take thorough notes or complete the study guide.

Important! Native American test on Tuesday, December 20th. This test will cover all 6 tribes that we have learned. Students were given a study guide today (the 6th) to begin working on. In addition, I told them that if they want to create a quizlet, PowerPoint, or other technology study guide, they can. If they share it with me, I will add it to my blog for other students to use. You should see your child's journal come home each night so that they can fill out the study guide and review the notes.
Students have been working on their totem pole or house. We will continue this work on Monday and Wednesday. Groups are also writing a paragraph to tell about the design process of the house or totem pole.
Tuesday, we will begin learning about European explorers. Students will have a chart in their notebook and fill it as we go.
Volunteer opportunity! I am looking for a few parents to help students in class on Tuesday, Dec. 13th and Thurs., Dec. 15th. We will be using the laptop cart to research the explorers online. Powell's class is from 12-12:30 and Hodge is 12:30-1.
I am also looking for a couple of parents to help hang up the totem pole and house projects in the hallway on Dec. 19th and 20th.
Please sign-up below if you are available. Thanks!

Today, students began creating the totem pole or house design that represents our Social Studies family. These will be hanging in the hallway the last week before the break and after the Winter break. Come check them out!
Tomorrow students will go on a scavenger hunt around the room to find the notes to fill out on the Pawnee. I want students up and moving and trying a different form of note-taking. We will review the notes this week before moving into the final tribe, Seminole. Students should spend a couple of nights this week reviewing the notes on the Hopi and Pawnee.
I was proud of the number of students that turned in the extra credit on today's due date!

Quizlet review on Kwakiutl, Inuit, and Nez Perce. We used this quizlet today in class and students verified their notes. The quiz is Friday. I reminded students that they need to be familiar with the material and be able to discuss the similarities and differences between the groups. I told them that I would give them the option to fill in a Venn diagram, chart, or write a paragraph to help when comparing.

Parents,
I told students last week that we would have a quiz on the Kwakiutl and Inuit. With some schedule changes this week, I have moved the quiz to next Friday, the 18th. This quiz will include the Kwakiutl, Inuit, and Nez Perce. Students will begin learning about the Nez Perce tomorrow in class. The standard being assessed in based on locating where these Native American cultures settled and on how they used their environment to obtain food, clothing, and shelter. Students will need to be very familiar with all of the parts in the standards. In addition, they will be comparing the differences and similarities between the three cultures.
I have encouraged students to take home their journals each night to review the material.
A study guide for your child in included for you to print or for your child to save it and complete it on the computer.

Kiwanis writing is due tomorrow!
The students have a map quiz this Thursday, Oct. 27th on map skills. We wrote this in our agenda last week and already for next week. If you don't see it in your child's agenda, you may want to ask them why they didn't write it in class when we talked about it. This is one of the study habits that I am helping to teach them. The map quiz will include vocabulary and the students labeling a blank map.
The vocabulary terms are: latitude, longitude, compass rose, physical map, political map, cardinal directions, and intermediate directions.
Last week, I told the students that I will give them the same blank map that we have been using and a list of the landforms/places to label. The landforms and locations that students will have label are: Great Plains, Great Basin, Death Valley, Gulf of Mexico, St. Lawrence River, Mississippi River, the Great Lakes, Rocky Mountains, Appalachian Mountains, Atlantic Ocean, and Pacific Ocean.
On Tuesday- Friday, students will begin learning about Native Americans and how their cultures developed in North America.

Monday was city construction day. They were excited to get started! The groups had a great time and I am already so impressed with the creativity. I wish I would have taken some pictures, but will be sure to next time to share with you.
This is a short week for content teaching. Today, students began the final Economics assignment. The students were posed with several questions to write a reflection about the economics unit. This assignment will be completed on Thursday. Students are encouraged to look through their journal and at their budget to help write the best reflection.
Tomorrow is the fire safety village field trip. Friday is STEM day.
Then, we will resume Social Studies after Fall Break with two weeks of map skills.

Students have a quiz on vocabulary terms tomorrow. These were given last week and students created flashcards to help them study. I told the students on Friday that they need to be able to identify and apply the meaning of each word.
One of the important things that I am working on with students is study habits and strategies. For the first quiz, students used quizlet and having the definitions written in their notebooks. For this set of words, I had students create flashcards with the word and definition. We will continue to discuss and use various strategies so that students can find the one that works best for them.
On Wednesday, students will participate in the Fire Safety presentation during Social Studies time.
This week, students will complete the comprehension questions on the Spending and Savings passage.
My Monday classes are began a materials list for their city and an official layout sketch of their city. I will send home an email later in the week with a list of materials that we would like to collect for the city.

This week, we are wrapping our discussion of Economic terms. Students have a quiz on these terms and wrote this in their agenda today. Reviewing these terms will be the only homework this week so I told the students to take home their journal each night.
This year, one of my roles is to teach your child how to study for a test. I want them to learn strategies for preparing for tests, and not just memorize for a test. This week and last, we talked about using flashcards, calling out answers verbally, and writing down terms as someone calls out the definition. Today, I showed the students how to use a website called, Quizlet. Tomorrow, we will go through the online flashcards for the economics terms.
Here is the quizlet for your child to access at home as well: https://quizlet.com/147791181/flashcards

During the first week of Social Studies, we focused on the Olympics since the Opening Ceremonies were Friday of the first week of school. I love the Olympics and many of your children do too! Each student has a chart taped into their notebook to keep track of the medals of various countries. We will update this twice a week. I have enjoyed talking with your children as medals are won and events are watched.
Students have been studying Economics over the past week. We began reading a passage together about the history of economics. The focus of this passage was to identify the important vocabulary words associated with this unit. I read some of the passage with students and they had an opportunity to read it independently as well. After discussing the terms, the students spent two days answering questions. Students that did not finish in class were given an opportunity to finish for homework. Tomorrow, students will be given back the paper and we will talk through the answers and common errors. This paper will come home this week with graded papers. I encourage you to look at the paper with your child.
This week, we will continue to focus on the various terms, but taking time to look at each one closely. On Friday, we began a discussion about supply and demand. This conversation will continue on Tuesday.
*A final note: Each day, I will discuss the homework for math in class before they leave. I told the students last week that if I tell them that they do not have homework, they are to write, None, in the box. You should see something written each day in your child's agenda.
